EDUCATION

The Worshipful Company of Loriners provides training for members of horse-related industries, equestrian societies and members of the riding public. The Company is completely non product linked and not involved directly with any lorinery sales or promotions. The objective of the Company is to serve the industry by providing education for riders and assisting the welfare of the horse.

The company runs lorinery courses plus other lecture days subject to demand. A lorinery seminar is also held in the autumn at Capel Manor College, Enfield (this is just off exit 25 of the M25). The three principle courses are:

LORINERY FOR SADDLERY STUDENTS

This course is for the saddlery students of Cordwainers at Capel Manor College, Enfield. This is a sixty-hour course that is completed over a twelve-month period. The course has a written exam and assignment. The students have several field trips throughout their course. The objective of these is to enable them to see lorinery in practical use, to understand the rider's part in its implementation and to gain experience of as many areas of the industry as possible. These have included the Royal Mews, Buckingham Palace, the National Horse Racing Museum, Newmarket, and visits to top event, racing and dressage yards.

RETAIL LORINERY

These courses are run by the British Equestrian Trade Association for members of the retail saddlery trade but are open to non-members. The lectures on this course are given by a member of the Worshipful Company of Loriners and is supported by them.

LORINERY FOR THE RIDING PUBLIC

This is a two-day course with the option of attending one or both days. Day one is classroom based and covers the bitting of the horse. Day two includes saddle trees, stirrups, spurs, saddle and bridle fitting as well as equine mouth examinations. It is divided between the classroom and the stable yard.

The training courses we offer focus on the practical implementation and understanding of the lorinery used in the horse world today. Courses vary in their content depending on the specific requirements and demands of the students involved. Evening lectures and short courses are also available. Our seminars delve more deeply into the history of bitting and metallurgy.

The study of lorinery is vital for successful riding and most importantly the well being of the horse. There can be no doubt that a sound knowledge of the horses conformation, the layout of his mouth, the correct selection of lorinery as well as awareness of the different metals used are all of paramount importance for a greater understanding of the use of lorinery.

It should be remembered that regardless of the bit's design it will be as mild or brutal as the rider’s hands and aids.
